SUMMARY:Kelley Smith with Jon Edwards
DESCRIPTION:Folksinger/songwriter Kelley Smith is a hopeless romantic who fancies old poetry and grandpa sweaters. All at once whimsical and haunting\, Smith delivers deeply affecting lyrics with wry charm and a time traveler’s voice. Prone to melancholy and daydreaming\, Kelley spent her childhood roaming the woods of Minnesota and singing to forest animals. To this day\, her longing for that landscape runs deep and seems to find its way into her songs in one way or another. \nRaised by musicians\, Smith always had music in her bones\, but it wasn’t until she was 40 and a mother of four that her first record\, Moon Child (2022)\, came to be. As an insomniac\, she wrote this first batch of songs by moonlight. They evoke a sense of belonging\, juxtaposed with escapism\, as she croons about long-term love\, grief\, and her draw to the night sky. \nSince 2022\, Kelley has had the honor of sharing stages with folks such as Charlie Parr\, Kelly Hunt\, Wild Horses\, Dave Simonett\, Alan Sparhawk\, Stephen Wilson Jr.\, and many others. Most often performing solo or as a duo\, Smith interprets old folk songs on guitar and banjo\, in addition to her original music. \n”In its truest form\, folk music requires us to slow down\, listen closely\, and let ourselves be absorbed by stories that take us to another place and time. And there might be no better example of that in the Minnesota music scene than Kelley Smith. These organic and unvarnished songs reflect life experiences that could as easily come from past lives as they could from Kelley’s soul.” – David Dennison\, Rieder Homestead Concerts \n”…armed only with her guitar and a spine-tingling voice\, you couldn’t tell she’s only been at this a couple years. Smith transported the room into a realm of enchantment both beautiful and sorrowful. With deeply affecting lyrics and haunting melodies\, Smith shared stories we could all relate to. Her solo acoustic set created an atmosphere of intimacy and vulnerability\, allowing the audience to connect on a deep and personal level..” – Carol Roth\, Adventures in Americana \nTickets\nMembers: $15\nNon-Members: $20 \nThe Terrace is Aitkin’s newest venue. It’s a non-profit\, outdoor performance venue operated by Aitkin County Friends of the Arts. The space is also a place for community gatherings. SUMMARY:JD Graham and Justin Clyde Williams
DESCRIPTION:Event Details\n\n\nJD Graham is an Americana singer/songwriter and Oklahoma native. His songs are confessional\, frank and often brutal. At the same time\, there’s a poetic quality to the lyrics that conveys some powerful imagery\, and the unrelenting darkness in Graham’s songs can be downright cathartic. His 2023 release “A Pound of Rust” propelled him to the national touring circuit\, performing in intimate listening rooms\, songwriter festivals including appearances at Mile 0 festival\, Born & Raised and Circus Mexicus . He finished his highly anticipated new album in December 2023 produced by Neilson Hubbard and Ryan Culwell. “Sergeant of Sorrow” will release on July 12\, 2024. \n“I knew I would meet my demons in prison and that one of us would die. I just didn’t know which one of us would walk out of there alive.” \nJustin Clyde Williams takes listeners on an emotional journey with his songs and stories you can relate to no matter where you call home. Capturing the full spectrum of life\, the good times and bad most of his songs you’ll hear serve as a soundtrack to his own experiences with love\, death\, heartache and that one time he “ate a little bit too much of that gummy bear” Raised on sounds between bluegrass and rock ‘n roll with a variety of influences\, when he’s not performing himself\, it’s not uncommon to see Clyde playing sideman for one of his buddies or appearing with Tyler Hatley in The Dick and Tammy Show. Justin Clyde Williams always leaves people wanting more with an unwavering experience that is blunt\, therapeutic\, candid and above all – unforgettable. \nTickets\nMembers: $20\nNon-Members: $25\nWeekend VIP “The Whole Shebang”: $100 \nWhat does the Weekend VIP Whole Shebang include? \n• Fri Aug 22\, 7-9pm – concert w/Low Down Drifters at The Terrrace.\n• Sat Aug 23\, 7-9pm – concert w/JD Graham & Justin Clyde Williams.\n• Sun Aug 24\, 1pm – A private\, catered performance on the 24th sponsored by Canción Tequila. \nDoors one hour before showtime. \nThe Terrace is Aitkin’s newest venue. SUMMARY:Drew Cooper with SongBridge
DESCRIPTION:DREW COOPER\nAnyone who has witnessed a performance from Drew Cooper can testify to experiencing a stirring of the soul kind of sensation as the music washes over. The husky\, soul soaked baritone of his voice is no doubt the very foundation his entire sound is built on. It’s a well-worn timbre that in one moment haunts you with the Teddy Pendergrass-esque stylings of old Motown\, and the next moment you’re  bobbing your head up and down in that involuntary way that only pure rock n roll can invoke. That rock spice is always going to be part of the meal with Cooper having grown up in the Midwest where classic rock dictated pretty music everything\, but you are also going to taste a hint of country and\, sometimes\, the gospel influence of his youth. It’s hard to know what to call this hodge-podge stew of savory sounds\, but Cooper serves it up this way. “Americana is the easiest way to explain it\, but that’s a blanket statement for those that have their own sound. Am I rock?  No.  Am I country?  No.  I just sing it and play it how I feel it.” \nDC MUSIC SAMPLE \nSONGBRIDGE\nAnown harmony infused quartet – Peter Lowe\, Christian McShane\, … etc.

But the inspiration for the song dates back to the time Roger went to Taipei\, Taiwan\, as a college student to teach English during the day and busk with his guitar at night for money. \nClyne continues to transform his life experiences\, inspirations\, observations and his own muses into timeless music. And whether he’s wearing his Converse high tops\, boots or sandals\, Clyne’s blend of punk rock\, country-western and mariachi influences have made him\, drummer PH Naffah\, guitarist Jim Dalton and bassist Nick Scropos – collectively known as Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers – one of America’s best live rock-n-roll bands. \nStarting with the seminal Tempe quartet\, The Refreshments\, Clyne and Naffah put the fun in rock during the 90s grunge era with a sense of humor. They also started what would become a trademark sound on all future albums by adding mariachi horns\, something Clyne was influenced by while in college studying Cultural Anthropology with an ethnography study of mariachis during a three month immersion stay with a local family in Ensenada\, Mexico. \nThe Refreshments’ debut album\, “Fizzy\, Fuzzy\, Big & Buzzy\,” became a cult classic. It produced the alternative radio hit “Banditos” which also had significant airplay on MTV and earned The Freshies an appearance on The Conan O’Brien Show. Clyne then penned and performed the theme song for the Mike Judge animated TV series\, King of Hill. In 2017\, Here’s to Life: The story of The Refreshments\, was released. The feature-length documentary was a hit with fans and critics alike. \nhttps://rogerclyneandthepeacemakers.com \nJ. BELL & THE LAZY SUSAN BAND \nWith twangy guitars\, luscious harmonies\, B3 organ blasts\, honky-tonk piano and a horn section\, j.bell & the Lazy Susan Band straddles Americana\, Blues & Country\, while maintaining that they are simply “straight up rock & roll”. Influenced by Bob Dylan\, Tom Petty\, Old 97s\, Counting Crows\, Soul Asylum and many more\, this Minnesota rock band always delivers energetic and memorable shows. Since 2001\, they have released six full-length records\, two EPs\, and a live album\, while juggling performances all over the upper Midwest as well as in Arizona and Mexico. \nhttps://jbellmusic.com \nThe Terrace is Aitkin’s newest venue. It’s a non-profit\, outdoor performance venue operated by Aitkin County Friends of the Arts. The space is also a place for community gatherings. When there are no scheduled events\, The Terrace is a welcoming place for the community to gather\, share meals and stories\, play card games\, or just relax.

SUMMARY:Midnight River Choir with Abby Spencer
DESCRIPTION:Event Details\n\n\nThe story of Midnight River Choir is proof that sometimes great bands just happen. One night\, four strangers ended up on a late night float trip down the Guadalupe River. As they made their way down the river singing songs\, the beautiful harmonies floated into the heads of sleeping campers. The next morning\, the boys overheard a man telling a friend that he was “awakened by a midnight river choir.” That was all it took. \nThe boys realized the magic of their combined talents and began writing and performing together under that River-God given name. The formation of Midnight River Choir was nothing short of a force of nature that now translates seamlessly during their live shows. This band needs no labels or comparisons. Their music speaks volumes about who and what they are. Their lives have been woven together by a strong thread of raw energy both on and off stage. They believe that what you get is what you give and they give everything they have to their crowds. When that kind of energy lands back at the feet of the boys it is something of supreme intensity. \nAnd no one ever forgets it. \nEric Middleton: Guitar\, Lead Vocals\nBob Driver III: Bass\, Vocals\nBlake Bentley: Piano\, Vocals\nGeorge Talbert: Drums\, Vocals \nVideo Sample \nABOUT ABBY \nAbby Spencer is not a new name in music. She has opened for national acts like Derek Jones\, Midnight River Choir\, Jamie Lin Wilson\, Courtney Patton\, Alex Williams\, Joe Stamm Band\, Shenandoah\, and more. In 2018\, Abby opened more doors by soloing around the Midwest in various venues. She considers herself country with a gritty undertone and identifies with artists like Cody Johnson\, Lainey Wilson\, and Ashley McBryde. By 2019\, Abby became an active member of the Midwest CMO. She additionally founded the band The Holler in 2019. The Holler is a popular group in the Midwest that successfully delivers live music goers country music to drink to. In 2022 Abby finally dove into songwriting\, sharing her heartfelt stories that audiences of all kinds can relate to. Releasing two singles in 2023 lead Abby to be nominated for the Midwest Country Music Organization’s New Artist of the Year\, as well as Music Video of the Year. \n\nGeneral Admission: $15 members\, $20 non-members \n**This is a seated show – after all seats have been sold\, 20 additional standing room only tickets will be sold. *** \nIf you’d like to share a table with other ticket holders (Tables hold 4 or 6 people\, first come first served)\, please purchase your tickets then email us at TheTerraceMN@gmail.com or friends@aitkinarts.org with the names. \nYour purchase toward any Aitkin County Friends of the Arts concert directly sustains & supports the future of performing arts in Aitkin County.
